Texas A&M football loses a top transfer WR option to injury for "several months"

One of the positions of concern for this Texas A&M football team coming into this spring has been the wideout spot. The top-end talent out wide for the Aggies can stack up against anyone else in the nation, but the lack of depth and different player archetypes was a potential worry for the Aggies.

A player who the Aggies snagged from the portal to help address this shortcoming was Troy WR Jabre Barber. Finishing exactly 1 yard short from a 1,000 yard season last year, Barber fit the mold of an Ainias Smith—while not as stout as Ainias, his ability to make moves in the open field from the slot position had him comparing favorably to the now-departed Aggie receiver.

Some bad news broke today on this front, however. Though Barber had been separating himself in camp, he has recently, according to Matt Zenitz of 247, undergone surgery precipitated by a foot injury. Barber will be out for "several months," according to the report by Zenitz.

This is an unfortunate turn of events for the Aggies. While they still have two portal options at the spot—Cyrus Allen and Wesley Watson—Barber had been a guy that was generating excitement within the program.

As the above tweet mentions, the Aggies are expected to pursue receiver options in the upcoming portal window. With the way the position had been stacked even before this injury, I think that would have been the case anyway, but this development even adds more urgency.

Still four-and-a-half months away from the opening game, there seems to be a possibility, based on the wording from Zenitz's report, that Barber could return during the course of the season. That would be a huge boost to this Texas A&M football team, but it will be harder to break into the rotation by that point. This is a disappointment all around, but hopefully Barber will make a quick recovery.
