Power ranking the SEC after week 3 - 9: South Carolina
The Gamecocks had some pretty worrying trends in the first few games that caught up to them in this one. This was a contest that the Commodores had circled, as they talked about several times before the game.
Of course, LaNorris Sellers exiting with the head injury he sustained has a lot to do with this. The game was much closer at that point, and Luke Doty plainly couldn’t get anything done against the ‘Dores after that point.
Because of that, I can’t fault them too much, but there are still a lot of issues to worry about here, especially in the designed run game for the Gamecocks.
The future is murky for Shane Beamer’s squad with this injury to Sellers, but concerning trends move beyond just that factor. We’ll have to watch them closely to see if this is just an early-season slump, or something more concerning.
For now, they have lost to the Commodores for the first time in 16 years, breaking one of the longest streaks in the conference. That’s got to be enough to put some of the fans in Columbia on edge, if they weren’t before.
