Power ranking the SEC after Week 5 - 10: Mississippi State

If nothing else, I think we know now that this Mississippi State team is a force to be reckoned with. They now head on the road against a power opponent for the first time this season, so we’ll soon know just how much of what we’ve seen was Starkville voodoo, but they look like a team to be taken seriously.

Brenen Thompson and Anthony Evans bring so much speed to the Bulldogs— something that makes this offense a real bear to deal with. Blake Shapen is showing why he was the starter over Michael Van Buren, even despite the evident talent of the latter, and Lebby has something going for State.

Even so, this is still a complete gauntlet of a schedule. It began this past week with the visit from the top-15 Volunteers, but a visit to College Station will be an even greater test. It won’t be long until Texas comes to town, and then you have Ole Miss awaiting at the end of the season.

Lebby’s seat was getting a little warm coming into the year given everything that happened in 2024 and all the players they lost to the portal. For now, though, he’s quelled any of that talk.
