SEC Week 2 power rankings - 5: Tennessee

The game-one win for the Volunteers looks a little worse right now after Syracuse barely beat UConn, of all teams. But they kept rolling this week with a massive win over ETSU, by a pretty significant margin.

Heupel, like Sark and Kiffin, really tries to run the score up on these teams, rather than treating the game as a scrimmage, like Mike Elko. There wasn’t a lot of rotation of personnel— it was just an attempt to name their score.

Whenever you as a team get into the 70s, you’ve had a pretty good day, though. I’m sure Tennessee fans are walking away from this one feeling pretty good, but they have a huge game against Georgia next week that I know was more than a little bit in the minds of the Volunteer faithful even before this game started.

That game has great potential to shape some early-season narratives for the conference, especially with Alabama coming to Athens two weeks later. It’s just been labeled as the Gameday destination for next week, so it will no doubt be one of the wildest scenes in the nation for next Saturday.
