SEC Week 2 power rankings - 12: Mississippi State

This is a downright tenure-defining win for Jeff Lebby over the Arizona State Sun Devils. It's enough to rocket him out of the bottom spot in these rankings, but not quite yet enough to move him out of the bottom quarter.

I'm still a bit skeptical of their chances this year for several reasons. First of all, Starkville is a cursed place to play, and so while I felt ASU's pain during this entire game, I'm not sure they were really, when all is said and done, the worse team in this one.

Second, while I think the speed of the MSU receivers can win them some games, I think they will have trouble standing up to more physical defenses. Thompson and Evans have game-breaking ability, but it's harder to leverage that against some of the top-end units in this league than you might think.

This was a win, nonetheless, that exceeded expectations. Props to Lebby and company for pulling it out late and in dramatic fashion. The Bulldogs will have two gimme games upcoming before they play Tennessee on September 27, and finally leave home to visit College Station on October 4.
