Ryan Williams reveals he almost ended up with Texas A&M football: '[Holmon Wiggins] almost got me'
If there's been a spot that could have used an infusion of explosiveness on this Texas A&M football team over the first half of the season, it's the wide receiver room. The Aggie wideouts really stepped up in this last game, but thinking back to games like Notre Dame, A&M really could have used some juice on the perimeter.
Because of this, Aggie receivers coach and co-OC Holmon Wiggins has come under fire a little bit over the last few weeksโalthough that criticism has died down a bit since this previous game. Wiggins came into College Station from Tuscaloosa with a reputation as an elite recruiter and plus developer, even though some Alabama fans had soured on his tenure near the end.
The Tide, of course, have one of the premier talents in the nation at the position on their team. Ryan Williams had already put the nation on notice by displaying his considerable talent in Bama's first few games, but it was his breakout performance against Georgia that really has made him a household name, only a few games into his collegiate career.
However, in a recent podcast appearance, Williams revealed that he almost didn't end up in Tuscaloosa. Despite being a native of Alabama, though, his runner-up wasn't Auburn, either. No, the school that almost poached him was Texas A&M.

As he says in the above video, it was Holmon Wiggins's influence that almost got him to College Station. It was so close that even his friends on campus and in the recruiting class at Alabama felt sure they were about to lose him to the Aggies.
This is a true "what could have been" moment. Williams is unlikely to leave Tuscaloosa with the success he's had there, but you never know in the age of the transfer portal. If nothing else, this speaks to the strength of the relationship Wiggins formed with him, which in turn speaks highly of the Aggie WR coach's recruiting ability.
Sooner or later, Wiggins will land a big fish for the Aggies. He came ever so close on this occasionโbut there are many more opportunities ahead.
