Taurean York was one of Mike Elko's most reliable players. He started every game in his three-year Texas A&M career, becoming a high-volume tackler and a leader. After no team picked him in the draft, York is now a UDFA with the Denver Broncos. Now, the decision to enter the NFL Draft is backfiring on the A&M fan favorite.
The defense is going through some new faces, but reliable ones. Ray Coney, the former Tulsa linebacker, will look to fill some big shoes this season. A&M star linebacker Daymion Sanford went down in the spring game with a major lower-body injury, but is optimistic to return to the field sometime in 2026.
This alone has Aggies fans wondering if York would've come back to A&M, all would be well. Simply put, Texas A&M could've used York as the undisputed leader of the team in 2026. It would've helped the Ags, while also massively improving his draft stock.
Taurean York should've been at Texas A&M in 2026 to improve his draft stock
Of course, nobody could've predicted that Sanford would go down with an unfortunate injury in the spring game. But even before that, the Texas A&M depth would've been loaded if York was still here.
Matt Galatzan from Locked On Aggies said what all fans are thinking. York should've stuck around. It would've helped the team and helped him in the process.
"Should Taurean York have come back for another year at Texas A&M instead of sticking in the draft and eventually going undrafted? My vote is yes. His vote may be totally different. "Matt Galatzan
Another argument some fans may have is that York probably couldn't have done anything to improve his stock in his senior season. He's a dependable tackler, but he's been critiqued several times for being too small, and there's not much he can do about that.
It's a fair thing to say, but there are several other linebackers in the league. Malcolm Rodriguez, Quincy Williams, Nakobe Dean and Dee Winters are notable LBs under 6 feet tall. Another year under Elko would've been a huge year for York. Now, he's going to have to climb a mountain to make a roster.
We wish nothing but the best for York, as he will have a legit shot to make it onto one of the best defenses in the NFL.
