Texas A&M softball snags number one ranking overall to show fruits of three years' labor
Texas A&M softball just achieved something that would have been considered unthinkable only a few years ago. The Aggies were in a bad place after the previous regime, but it turns out that hiring Trisha Ford was a stroke of genius.
Ford was previously the coach at Arizona State, and the Sun Devils were none too happy to see her walk out the door. Her giftedness was evident out in Tempe, and the Aggies zeroed in on her because of it.
Even so, the turnaround that was required in College Station was no small potatoes. The Aggies needed a culture shift and talent infusion— and Ford brought both in spades.
Last year, the Aggies nearly took down the number one overall seed in the super regional when they faced off against the Texas Longhorns. They won the first game and suffered two close losses for their season to come to an end— but now, it looks more like that was just a beginning for Ford and company.
After a stellar start to the year and last week's sweep of a top-10 LSU squad, the Aggies are now the top-ranked softball team in the nation.

Edging out perennial powerhouses like Oklahoma will never be an easy task in this sport, but Ford has her Aggies in pole position right now. The Aggies are a well-deserved number one after everything they've been able to pull off this year.
This has been the definition of an impressive and complete turnaround. Ford's squad is a legitimate national title challenger, and I can't wait to see them continue to compete this year.
