Texas A&M baseball just knocked off Tennessee and Texas for a big time bat from the transfer portal. The Aggies have been long time suitors for Maryland short stop Chris Hacopian, but with numbers like the former Terp put up at the plate, there's no way they were landing him without a big time battle.
A battle like that is just what they found themselves in, as the Volunteers and Longhorns made late runs to try to edge their way in front of the Aggies. However, Michael Earley and company stayed the course and ended up being the ones with whom Hacopian signed.
This is a welcome addition with the exit of Jace LaViolette for the draft. Hacopian is not the all-around player that LaViolette was, but especially after a slump last year from Jace, the Aggies need some more juice in their lineup. Hacopian can certainly provide that.

The Aggies were excellent on the mound last year for the most part— it was at the plate where they struggled, strangely enough. Despite Earley's background as a hitting coach, the Aggies were one of the worst-hitting teams in the league despite the occasional breakout.
Welcome to Aggieland, Chris 👍

In 2025, Hacopian slashed .375/.502/.656 with 14 homers, 61 RBI and a 1.158 OPS ⚾️#GigEm pic.twitter.com/eqRMJ51r2Q
Hacopian's weakness, though, is his fielding percentage. At just a touch over 90%, his fielding would have been the worst of any regular rotation player for the Aggies last year. A&M had their fair share of issues on that front in 2025, so this is concerning, but the addition of elite fielding coach Cliff Pennington offsets that somewhat.
This is a big time win, no matter how you slice it. To outlast a couple of big-spending programs like Tennessee and Texas is no small matter, especially when the Aggies are in a bit of a no-man's-land right now with regard to the future of the coaching position.
