Texas A&M baseball won their final out of conference midweek game last night, triumphing over the lowly Prairie View A&M Panthers in Blue Bell Park. Though the final outcome was favorable for the Aggies, it didn't look like it was going to be at first.
Texas A&M went down to the Panthers early in this game— a team that should not have been able to touch the Aggies, in all honesty. This is a squad that is bottom 10 in the country when it comes to the RPI rankings, and they were leading the Ags at for several of the opening frames.
When all was said and done, the Panthers ended up plating seven runs against the Aggies. Now, it ended up being moot, as Texas A&M baseball put 16 runs across in this one, but the pitching concerns are beginning to rise from a dull roar to become deafening.
Texas A&M pitching concerns keep getting worse even after Prairie View win
In all fairness, this was a midweek game. You are not putting your best arms out on the mound in cases like these, and it was Juan Vargas— not a weekend guy— who was out there at first.
Even so, though, the concern with the pitching staff has been the coaching, not necessarily the talent. There's a reason that Vargas is wearing the maroon and white; he's more than capable as a player, but the coaching for the position has simply not been up to par.
Every single Texas A&M baseball fan can feel the same thing: that this pitching problem will end up dooming the Aggies when tournament time comes. Don't get me wrong: this is an all-time talented lineup for the Aggies on the offensive side of the ball, and they'll be able to hit their way out of a lot of problems.
But sooner or later, the hits will dry up, and the Aggies will need to rely on their arms. That's what happened this past weekend against the Auburn Tigers, and it ended up in the Aggies' first series loss— nearly a sweep— since they played Georgia.
Something will have to change, and soon. It may take until after the season, but with the little leeway that Michael Earley has, he's got to address this problem.
