Texas A&M baseball opened the season just about as well as fans could have hoped, as the Aggies smoked the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles in a dominant sweep. That's obviously not a frightening opponent, but compared to the opening season series last year, wherein the Aggies looked quite a bit shakier, it was a welcome development.
As a result, the Aggies moved up one spot in the latest top 25 rankings from D1Baseball, budging up from 25th to 24th. Things could have gone quite a bit worse, of course, as the Aggies didn't drop a game— whereas teams like Florida, Georgia, and Wake Forest all stumbled. Even top-ranked UCLA let a game go in their opening series against UC-San Diego.

The Aggies remain unblemished, however. They'll need to rack up a high number of wins in the non-conference, as their SEC slate is again intimidating— they have series against no. 21 Oklahoma, no. 14 Georgia, no. 3 Texas, no. 2 LSU, no. 12 Florida, no. 9 Auburn, and no. 4 Mississippi State coming up. Their only unranked series against conference opponents are Ole Miss, Missouri, and Vanderbilt— who was ranked in the preseason but just dropped out.
That's not even to take into account their upcoming date with the aforementioned top-ranked UCLA Bruins at Globe Life Field in Arlington in a little less than two weeks. While it's only one game, that will be a real testing ground for this Aggie team, and will show fans a lot about how this season might go for Mike Earley and company.
All things considered, though, the beginning of this season has been a step in the right direction. Cliff Pennington's influence was seen in the improved fielding percentage, but it's still a small sample size as of yet. The Aggies need to keep stacking wins on wins here in the early going, starting with a win in the midweek game against the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders and then— hopefully— another sweep this upcoming weekend against the Penn Quakers.
