Texas A&M basketball just got a major boost to their tournament resume following huge upset
The last few years for Texas A&M basketball have all resulted in one kind of consternation or another when it comes time for Selection Sunday. Whether it's white-knuckling the process to see if the Aggies will be in the field at all or waiting to see where exactly the Ags land after an ugly couple of losses, things haven't always been the smoothest when it comes to the Big Dance.
That's why getting early-season, major wins is important. And though the Ags have suffered a pair of losses that won't age particularly well going forward, they've also notched some pretty good wins along the way.
The first one that comes to mind, of course, is the victory over a top-25 Ohio State team. That was an action-packed night in Reed Arena, and the Aggies will reap the benefits of that one in a major way going forward.
But last week's victory over the Creighton Blue Jays may be the one to top them all in the Aggies' non-conference. After last night's big upset, that is.
The Blue Jays took on the no. 1-ranked Kansas Jayhawks last night in an aviary battle for the ages. This one ended with a rather lopsided score, but not in favor of the nation's top-ranked team.
Rather, it was Creighton who emerged with the 13-point win. The court was stormed as the Blue Jays came out victorious in what will no doubt be the highlight of their season (barring some tournament magic, that is).
That is a win that will prop Creighton up as they head into their mid-major conference slate—and, by extension, the Aggies.
Since Buzz Williams's squad notched that hard-fought victory over the Blue Jays, they will reap transitive benefits when it comes to rankings like RPI and NET. That will pay dividends going forward for the Ags in a way that few non-conference wins have in the Buzz Williams era.
There's no doubt that this month's matchup against the Purdue Boilermakers will be the headliner of the non-conference slate for the Aggies, but I have a feeling the Creighton game will loom large as we inch closer towards March. Buzz and company have to be feeling good to have that win under their belt.
