This looked like a Texas A&M basketball team capable of soaring higher than any other Aggie squad has before. Now, to do that, A&M needs something special.

With March Madness bracket placement gone sour for Texas A&M basketball, magical season appears to be hanging by a thread

Texas A&M basketball looked like nothing short of a juggernaut in the middle of the season. After some unfortunate losses that came without Wade Taylor, the Aggies had their leading scorer back, and they kept winning games.

Those fortunes changed with a weird midweek visit to Mississippi State. That game kicked off a four-loss streak, including dropping a contest to Vanderbilt at home.

It was that stretch where the all-too-familiar complaints and apprehension began to set in. Just the same old Aggies, many started to say, and others began to worry that they were right.

The win over Auburn looked like it had turned things around. A&M went down to LSU and took care of business handily down there as well. The Ags seemed destined for a three seed— until the SEC Tournament rolled around.

The funny thing is that, despite all of the high-level play that the Aggies put on in Nashville in previous years— performances that really availed nothing in the eyes of the committee— it's just this one season where they don't come out gangbusters that it actually affects them. A&M slid from a three to a four seed, and are facing a possible nightmare matchup in the first round.

The A&M faithful had dreams that this Aggie team could go further than any other had in the past. That would mean moving through the Sweet Sixteen, at the very least— winning three games in the tourney. Now, that path would mean getting through both Michigan and Auburn— and with the Tigers no doubt out for blood after what we saw in College Station almost two weeks ago, that will be an even tougher task than normal.

It's looking like A&M needs a miracle to achieve the season they had dreamed of. Of course, we've seen this program pull off miracles in March Madness before— but there's a reason such occurrences are so rare. This is dangerous territory for the Aggies, without a doubt— but they're not dead yet.
