Texas A&M basketball wins big, but alarm bells keep blaring for Aggies
Texas A&M basketball defeats Southern by double digits, but Aggies took a while to wake up
Texas A&M basketball took home their fourth straight win tonight to move to 4-1 after a season-opening loss to UCF. Even though this ended up a double-digit win, triumphing by 17 points over Southern, there are still many disgruntled Aggie fans after this one.
Why, you may ask, is that the case? Well, I need do no more than point you to what the score was at halftime, where Southern led the Aggies 39-25. Texas A&M basketball, a 26-point favorite coming into this one, was down by 14 at the halfway point.
Now, credit where credit is due. The Aggies took the effort up to 11 in the second half, outscoring the Jaguars 46-15. That was a show of dominance, to say the least.
But this is simply not the kind of effort that will get it done in a season where the Aggies have designs on a conference championship and tournament run. You can't simply play one half of basketball after slacking off for the first 20 minutes.
If Texas A&M basketball fans want this team to be better, they need to hold them to a higher standard. A win is a win, and a loss would have been absolutely catastrophic, so credit the Aggies for avoiding that result. But this is a team that needs to be better than this.
I have no idea why Buzz's teams always seem to do this kind of thing. I am sincerely dumbfounded as to the reason behind it. Routine lack of preparedness and inconsistent play has bitten them far too much in Williams's tenure.
All we can hope for now is that this is a wakeup call for this Aggie team. But I have a sneaking feeling it isn't the last time I'll be saying that this season.
