Texas A&M basketball coach Buzz Williams ranked in top half of March Madness coach rankings
Texas A&M basketball fans can give Buzz Williams a lot of grief, but there are certain things you have to admit when talking about the Aggie head man. First of all, he's nothing if not a stand-up guy. Even his most ardent detractors have to admit that this is the kind of coach that you'd want your kid playing for.
Second, for whatever issue you might take with him, Williams is a coach that is admired by his peers. Others in the industry regularly mention the respect they have for him, and most would rank Williams as a solid coach in his own right.
That second aspect was validated again today with Williams being ranked in the upper half of coaches in the tournament by Busting Brackets. Though, to listen to some Aggie fans in the throes of emotional pain during a loss, you'd think Williams has no idea what he's doing on the court, it's clearly not seen that way around the country.
Williams has a very particular strategy that he employs, one that has won him a lot of basketball games as a head coach. That's something you have to respect, even if you don't like the way that the team looks all of the time.
It's not something that's aesthetically pleasing. It's a throwback vibe, in a lot of ways, even though it's an approach that's very highly influenced by analytics. But it's something that, along with his acumen in other areas, has garnered the respect of his peers.
