Texas A&M is looking to forge their way towards a postseason berth in baseball despite a less-than-stellar record at the beginning of the year. That's being a bit kind, actually: given the team that the Aggies were putting out on the diamond, the opening part of the year was nothing short of an unmitigated disaster.
They've made a major turnaround, however, and are back on track to making the postseason. After winning series against Tennessee, Arkansas, and LSU— all of which were ranked as top-two teams when the Aggies played them— A&M is back in the driver's seat when it comes to their destiny in the tournament.
The Aggies still have some work to do, however. They must sweep a Missouri team that is winless in conference right now and do some work in Athens, Georgia, against a Bulldogs team that is ranked as the top team in the land by at least one service.
It's not too far out to anticipate the Aggies' postseason destination, however— and D1Baseball is doing just that in their latest projection of the field of 64.
Texas A&M will have two chances at revenge if D1Baseball postseason prediction comes to pass
The leading college baseball media outlet currently predicts the Aggies to land as the three-seed in the Tucson regional, hosted by the Arizona Wildcats. There, A&M would be paired with the Wildcats, the USC Trojans, and Sacramento State.
A&M suffered an early-season loss to the Wildcats on a weekend down in Houston where dedicated fans began to sense that something was amiss with the then-top-ranked team. Taking the regional against UA would represent a chance for revenge, no doubt— but it's the potential super regional where the big stakes are.
If A&M advances in this projected bracket, their super regional opponent would be none other than the Texas Longhorns. After losing three games in Austin very recently, that's a thought that could make Aggie fans wince— but this A&M team just keeps getting better.
Especially after the Longhorns had a slice of humble pie, looking entirely noncompetitive as they were swept themselves by an Arkansas team that A&M took two out of three from in Fayetteville, the Aggies could be in prime position to dole out some more revenge in that instance.
One can only speculate about the impact that a guy like Weston Moss could have had if he had been able to go against the Longhorns, and hopefully LaViolette is out of his slump by that point. With each of those games against Texas being decided by the slimmest of margins, A&M fans should not be afraid of rising to the challenge against Schlossnagle and the Longhorns if the opportunity comes.
