If you were an avid watcher of that Texas A&M football last season, chances are you saw that the kicking game was becoming a weakness near the end of the season. Good news: Texas A&M may have just fixed that months before the season opener.

Freshman Asher Murray is already making a name for himself in Aggieland, knocking down a 50+ yard field goal in the Maroon and White Spring Game. It's a good sign for a kicking department that had little identity by the end of last season.

Freshman kicker Asher Murray is what Texas A&M fans were begging for

Murray is looking to make an immediate impact, as he was ranked the No. 3, No. 5 and No. 14 kicker nationally, according to 247Sports, Rivals/On3 and ESPN. Murray also hit a 56-yard field goal as a senior, showing deep range for his position. It sure looks like he already addressed the obvious elephant in the room for Elko last season.

Randy Bond had his worst season in 2025, kicking 63.2 percent on his field goals. Bond, usually a reliable kicker, had finally broken down when it mattered most. Elko shuffled around to replace Bond, but that never worked either.

Of course, the team's woes went far beyond Bond. The offense wasn't producing as much as they did, and the defense was missing assignments, too. But when the veteran kicker became an issue, it was another problem Elko had to worry about.

Murray is going to have a long career, hopefully at Texas A&M, but he's likely to see some competition with transfer kicker David Olano from Illinois, who also hit a field goal in the Spring game. Either way, these are safety valves you need if you're contending for something big, and these guys have already proven they can be big.
