Texas A&M football poaches high-potential offensive weapon from Longhorns via portal

Texas A&M football has pulled off another big time portal addition, this time at the expense of their bitter in-state rival.

Texas Longhorns tight end Amari Niblack (8) is forced out of bounds by Vanderbilt Commodores linebacker Bryan Longwell (4) during the first half of their game at FirstBank Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024.

Texas A&M football lands transfer Amari Niblack from Longhorns; Former Alabama TE was heir apparent to Gunnar Helm in Austin

Texas A&M football is continuing their impressive portal run in this winter window. The Aggies have done a great job in addressing needs so far, adding some big time talent at receiver and some quality players along the defensive line as well.

For all their talent in those areas, though, Aggie fans were looking for an addition at another position as well. The tight end spot was something of a disappointment this past year, and A&M fans were looking for an upgrade in the portal.

Elko’s staff has added a few good pieces already in the portal at the position, though they’re known more as blockers. There’s some potential with Nate Boerkircher, the Nebraska transfer, as a pass-catcher, but after some of the failures up front we saw from the Aggies’ 2024 roster at the position, blocking is definitely needed.

The Ags have potentially just picked up their premier TE pass-catching target, however. TE Amari Niblack, formerly of Alabama and Texas, just committed to the Aggies.

Niblack is quite the athlete at TE, and has the potential to be a big time red zone weapon with his length. Though his production hasn’t been eye-popping thus far, he has been behind some big time players up until this point in his career.

What makes this even sweeter for Texas A&M football fans is that the Aggies stole him right out from under the Longhorns’ nose. Texas snagged Niblack last offseason in the portal, but with the emergence of Gunnar Helm, the former Alabama TE didn’t get as many touches as many expected.

Even so, Niblack was expected to pick up the mantle at the position next season for the Longhorns. Now, he’ll be wearing Maroon and White instead.
