SEC Mike holds Texas A&M football in far too low a regard in initial 2025 power rankings
Texas A&M football ended this past year on a regrettable slide, falling from 7-1 after defeating LSU to 8-5 at the conclusion of their season. Some would say this is just how the season stacked up for the Aggies, with all of their most difficult games in that final month, but there certainly seemed to be a regression in play overall.
That has some Aggie fans concerned going forward, but there are also a lot of reasons to be excited about the upcoming season. Chief among those reasons is the great job that Mike Elko has done in the transfer portal thus far, addressing well the biggest needs of the team— including wide receiver, where the Aggies may have brought in the nation's best class at the position.
Combine that with another year in the defensive scheme Elko runs, another year of experience for Marcel Reed— who will hopefully provide the continuity at the position that the Aggies haven't had since 2020— and an offensive line that should return every starter, and the Ags could be one of the most improved teams in the conference next year.
Not everyone shares that opinion, however. SEC Mike, a popular talking head around the conference, is clearly not very high on the Aggies for the upcoming year.
I get maybe selling on the team a little bit if you haven't thought about it a whole lot, but 10th in the conference is way too far down. Especially behind teams like Florida, Auburn, and LSU.
The Tigers in particular are far too high. Nussmeier's struggles this past year, even with the team boasting those two first-round tackles, were evident; with a less-experienced line, they will only be more pronounced.
Let's make the case, though, for the Aggies' regression: they lose key defensive line players, their top receiver, and that's about it. They have obviously upgraded at receiver overall though, and the defensive line still looked pretty capable of causing havoc against USC.
In my opinion, 10 is way too low of a rank for the Aggies next year. I think they finish as a top-5 team in the conference with a chance at making a run for the top 3.
