Texas A&M football spring position preview: TE can finally be dual-threat position in Collin Klein's offense
Texas A&M football has had their fair share of big time TE prospects over the last few years. Especially since Jimbo Fisher stepped foot on campus, the Ags have had one or two huge threats at the position most years.
That tailed off a bit in 2024, however. It was difficult to find a guy on the roster who could both catch and block at a decent level, so the position took a bit of a nosedive.
After adding three portal players at the position, though, A&M fans are hoping that TE can see a resurgence this year. Let's run down who's on campus this spring.
Theo Mehlin Ohrstrom
The perennial "what-if" guy on A&M's roster finally began to break out last year. Though his final numbers weren't all that impressive to those simply surveying stat sheets, his progression on the field was well-pleasing to Aggie fans.
His ability to get open and catch the ball was on full display last year, despite a dropped pass in the Auburn game. If he continues to develop there, and more importantly as a blocker, he will be an every-down player for the Aggies next year.
Amari Niblack
From Alabama, to Texas, to Texas A&M, Niblack is looking to finally fulfill his potential. His reputation as a jumbo receiver precedes him, and he can add a real downfield threat to this TE room.
However, the question is his blocking ability. Can he progress enough in that area to be a useable player for the Ags? That remains to be seen at the moment. If so, this will be one of the more impactful portal pickups for the Aggies of the entire cycle.
Micah Riley
Another portal TE, Riley came over from Auburn with scant career numbers but plenty of hype. That has mostly to do with his reputation as a blocker, as the Tigers saw him as one of their better players on that front.
That's definitely needed for this position group in College Station. Whiffed blocks were far too common for Aggie TEs this past season, so the kind of physicality that Riley brings is a huge plus. In opposition to the guys above him on this list, its his pass-catching that needs some work.
Nate Boerkircher
Boerkircher is quietly gaining a lot of positive reviews so far since he stepped on campus. He may be the best dual-threat TE at the position, already being a plus blocker and apparently developing quickly as a receiving threat.
Though his commitment received little adulation from Aggie fans, given that it occurred while they were waiting on another high-profile transfer addition, he could end up being highly impactful for A&M. Here's hoping that he can see the field quickly.
Kiotti Armstrong
The ultimate wild card here is the true freshman, Kiotti Armstrong. Armstrong is the definition of a freak athlete, moving extremely quickly for his massive frame. His measurables remind me of Georgia's Darnell Washington— a rare combination of speed and size.
The question is whether he'll be ready for this year. He had the reputation of being a somewhat raw player coming out of high school, so it may take some time for him to get the polish he needs to contribute. If he does see the field regularly, I'd wager it's in the back half of the year.
