Texas A&M's late-season skid in 2024 has obscured a lot of relevant details, in my opinion, in the minds of many outside observers. The Aggies, who of course started off 7-1 with their only loss being to Notre Dame, went 1-4 in their final 5 games to finish with a disappointing 8-5 record.
Of course, that record was only disappointing thanks to the expectations that were built up by the start. In reality, it was their best finish since 2021, and showed the progress that Mike Elko was able to make with a somewhat patchwork team that he assembled largely in the transfer portal.
What really failed the Aggies down the stretch was their pass defense and their rushing offense. With the injury to Le'Veon Moss, the Aggies were without one of the best players in the conference in their backfield, and there were some coaching issues going on in the back seven that Mike Elko didn't shy away from mentioning.
With Elko taking the defense back over, and bringing in elite minds like Lyle Hemphill to help bridge the gap, I have full faith that that side of the ball will be back up to Elko's standards in 2025. It's the other side of the ball where folks have more questions, but if the Aggies live up to this prognostication from Pro Football Focus, this could well be a playoff team.

PFF put out this ranking today which clearly prizes the Aggies' talent highly:

One thing that may jump out to Aggie fans is that they have to play four of the seven teams listed ahead of them in the upcoming season, which is a bit foreboding. But think about it: if the defense takes the step forward that Elko's defenses always have from one year to the next and the offense is operating at a top-10 rate, this Aggie team should be competitive with any squad in the entire country.
With Moss and Owens in the backfield, Concepcion, Craver, and Bussey out wide (not to mention spring superstar Ashton Bethel-Roman), and an extremely experienced offensive line leading the way for dynamic dual-threat QB Marcel Reed, this really could be an unstoppable attack. It all needs to mesh and gel, but this is a unit that could be striking fear into the heart of opposing fanbases sooner rather than later.
