Texas A&M’s choice for Kyle Field blackout game in 2026 season is an obvious one

The paucity of choice in this year’s slate means that there is a clear choice for Texas A&M when it comes to their alternate uniform game.

Texas A&M’s newest tradition in the Mike Elko era has proven to be a hit with fans, as the response to the alternate “blackout” uniforms has been resounding support. The Aggies have seen a lot of success in these games, winning both that they’ve had so far.

The basic prerequisite for these games, of course, is that they take place at night. Texas A&M fans recall all too well the fact that they had “Aggie Nights” themed black uniforms ready for the South Carolina game back in 2014, but they fell flat when that game got scheduled for a noon kickoff— now, with the ability to schedule these games a little further out than they were previously able to do, that’s not so much of a problem.

Because of that, fans can look down the slate at the Aggies’ schedule for the upcoming season and see which games would be good candidates for the blackout night. Unfortunately, there are only about three choices for Texas A&M in this year’s slate— and it presents the Aggies with an obvious choice for this theme.

Texas A&M’s choice for 2026 blackout game can only go in one direction

The Aggies have two confirmed night games for the upcoming year and two more potential night games. The opener against Missouri State is set for 6 PM on September 5, while the final game— the Lone Star Showdown— is scheduled for 6:30 PM. Neither of these makes a lot of sense for the Aggies’ blackout game— there won’t be a lot of hype for the game against the Bears, of course, and it would be strange to wear an alternate uniform for a rivalry game.

That leaves the two potential night games— both of which were given the “flex” designation by the networks, meaning they could be scheduled anywhere between 2:30 PM and 7 PM. It’s a bit of a gamble, but the Aggies will have to plan for one of these games to be set for the evening.

The more likely one of the two— Arkansas and Tennessee— is the game against the Volunteers. The Razorbacks are not slated to be a very good team, meaning that the game is more likely to be earlier in the day— and even if not, there will be less hype for this one than there will be for the Tennessee game.

The Vols, even without Chaz Coleman, are going to be a force to be reckoned with again this year in the SEC, and will have a great chance of entering Kyle Field with two, one, or even zero losses. That will be a top-shelf matchup, without a doubt, meaning that Kyle will have to be in full effect.

Texas A&M will be seeking revenge for a loss in 2023 up in Knoxville, an absolutely dreadful 19-13 fall in a game that the Aggies had no business losing. In this game late in the 2026 season, hopefully the Aggies can get that vengeance— and most likely, that will be behind the excitement of a blackout game.
