Texas A&M baseball took game one of the College Station Regional today with a massive come from behind victory over the Lamar Cardinals this afternoon. The Aggies looked like their goose was cooked early on in this game, as the Cardinals— who Texas A&M defeated earlier in the season by 20 runs— went up 5-0 early on.
However, the tides began not long afterwards. The switch on the mound from Shane Sdao to Gavin Lyons calmed things down defensively in a big way, and by the time Clayton Freshcorn came in, it was all but over for the Cardinals.
Gavin Grahovac got the scoring started for the Aggies with a solo shot, and Caden Sorrell followed that up taking first after being hit by a pitch. That was a call that was hotly contested by the Lamar catcher, and the fiery interchange between he and Sorrell, as well as a challenge levied and lost by Lamar's Will Davis, energized the crowd and the team enough to push the Aggies over the top.
Aggies overcome horrendous start with massive surge over Lamar in regional game 1
When Texas A&M trailed by 5, hope was quicly fading. The Aggies hadn't overcome a deficit like that in regional play since all the way back in 2019 against the West Virginia Mountaineers, when they needed a walk-off grand slam to escape that game alive.
However, the Aggie offense finally woke up after innings of slumber dating back to the Auburn loss in the SEC Tournament. And when they woke up, they did so emphatically: between Grahovac, Sorrell, Hacopian, and even guys like Ben Royo, the Cardinals were helpless on the mound in the latter part of the game.
Texas A&M will now advance to await the winner of tonight's game between the USC Trojans and the Texas State Bobcats. Texas A&M has played the Bobcats twice already this season, winning a midweek game in College Station and falling by one run in a midweek outing down in San Marcos. They have not faced the Trojans this year.
USC brings some elite arms into this regional, which has to be the biggest worry for the Aggies. If Texas A&M's offense is having a tough day, it's very rare for the pitching to be able to carry the weight of the team. However, this is exactly why the Aggies saved Aiden Sims from starting in game one: if they do end up facing the Trojans in the second game, they'll have their ace ready to go.
However, don't make any mistake: the Bobcats are more than capable of knocking off the Trojans. USC has elected to save their ace for game two as well, and that could end up being a deadly mistake— even though the Trojans' number two guy could be a number one a lot of places.
Texas A&M will roll into tomorrow night rested, refreshed, and ready after winning this first contest. Hopefully, we see the momentum from late in the game today continue as they face off with either the Trojans or the Bobcats tomorrow night.
