Texas A&M fans have known for a while that this is a failed season in College Station. The Aggies entered the year as College Football Playoff contenders, but through eight games, they are the furthest thing from the playoff pictureβ sitting at 4-4 on the year, the Aggies are going to have a heck of a time even making a bowl game.
This comes despite massive preseason expectations even from inside the buildingβ there were a lot of people close to the program who were high on this team, and the media surrounding the Aggies seemed to concur. There's been a failure of coaching at some point along the line, of course, and so there will have to be some changes made.
There are a lot of fans who want to see Elko make a move expeditiously, of course, but they may not get that chance given the kind of restructure that is going to have to happen for the Aggies. This is a change that will run deeper than just an offensive coordinator moveβ there are quite a few staffers that will have to be replaced as well, so it doesn't make a ton of sense to remove the OC and promote a staffer you are simply going to dismiss.
Tea leaves may suggest staff changes coming for Mike Elko's program
However, those wanting to see Elko make a move may be happy with the tea leaves that Aggie fans just got. For the first time in the Mike Elko era, Texas A&M will not be making their coordinators available to the media for press conferences on the bye weekβ not a sure signal that staff changes are coming, but it's also not nothing.
No football media availabilities this week due to Texas A&Mβs open week, according to the program.

There will be a radio show this week, but it will not feature football.
Next availability will be head coach Mike Elko on Nov. 2 to preview trip to South Carolina.
The two previous years under Elko have seen the Aggies with one and zero losses in 2024 and 2025, respectively, when the bye week came around. This time, the Aggies have four losses and are on a far worse trajectory than previously. Especially when both sides of the ball have failed to live up to expectations this profoundly, that could make for some awkward press conferences.
But it does not seem at all that this is the reason why these pressers are being elided. Elko and this team have never run from these kinds of environments when things get tough; the head man routinely takes responsibility after losses (to the point that some frustrated fans who will call out anything have begun to mock it), and Marcel always appears to answer for his performances after the team falls to an opponent.
It's not a running from accountability thing. So why make this move? The other option would be to maintain focus within the building on getting some broken processes fixed during this time, but short pressers don't seem like they'd be a huge distraction from that.
It seems likely that this is a herald of things to come. There are staffers that fans would like to keep around, yesβ Trooper Taylor and Adam Cushing are two big names on the offensive side that the Aggies would like to have around going forward. But there's going to have to be some major changes outside of that, and this seems like a signal that that is what is happening.
