Texas A&M softball has suffered an early exit from the SEC Tournament in Lexington, Kentucky, after coming into the week as one of the top seeds in the conference. Trisha Ford's squad sits at 36-16 after losing to the Auburn Tigers in the conference tournament and will now have to white-knuckle the upcoming selection show, as they are right on the cut line for hosting in the NCAA Tournament.

The Aggies are solidly in the field overall, and will most likely always be with Trisha Ford at the helm. But a loss to an Auburn team that was only 4-20 in conference this year is a bit of a black mark on this Aggie team's resume.

It will be balanced out by their recent victory over the juggernaut no. 1 Oklahoma Sooners, but you still have to think that this was a disappointment for those hoping to see a little more fire out of this squad in Lexington.

Texas A&M softball awaits fate with NCAA hosting chances on the line

The Aggies pulled even with the Tigers in the bottom of the 6th at 8 runs apiece after falling behind early, but the mound performance out of A&M from that point on was not what it needed to be, as the Tigers notched three more runs in the seventh.

The Aggies couldn't even answer with one, which resulted in them being sent home. Some were hoping to see a showdown with the Texas Longhorns in Lexington, but the Aggies' chief rival— who are still in competition for the SEC tournament crown— won't have to face off with the maroon and white, it looks like.

That said, there are already brackets being drawn up to pair these two in a super regional. That would be an exciting opportunity for both sides, of course, but ultimately very painful for whoever goes home. This loss also makes it less likely, as Texas will probably end up as a 5 or 6 seed, while the Aggies are looking to land somewhere around 16 (if they host at all).
