Elite receiver Jase Mathews, a talent out of Mississippi who was just named the no. 17 overall player in the newly-released Rivals 300, has announced his top group and commitment date. Texas A&M has made the cut alongside a trio of SEC teams in LSU, Auburn, and Ole Miss, with Mathews setting his commitment date for August 8.

Texas A&M currently has three receivers committed in Aaron Gregory, Madden Williams, and Mike Brown, a group of three with a lot of potential. Gregory could end up as a five-star himself when all is said and done, and Williams is a guy who has gotten a lot of buzz recently.

However, the Aggies have not been shy about their intention to pursue another receiver for the class. They recently lost out on Ethan "Boobie" Feaster and have continued pursuit there, as well as in the hotly-contested recruitment of Tristen Keys. Mathews could fill that final slot, however, and the Aggies are reportedly in good standing there.

Jase Mathews names Texas A&M as finalist with August 8 commitment date upcoming

Mathews is a piece of the puzzle for the Aggies to continue their drive for the top overall class. That was a dream that seemed like it might have been slipping away when Lamar Brown committed to LSU, but the Aggies still have a bit of life— their chances rise if they can land Mathews.

Though Mathews is ranked highly by Rivals, the same company has not been so high on the Aggies' commits in general. It's difficult to tell if they will remain an outlier here and Mathews remain low on ESPN and 247's lists, or whether there will be regression to the mean from one side or the other.

One thing is for sure: recruiting rankings or no, this is a race that Mike Elko and the Aggies would love to win. Mathews is a polished talent at the receiver spot, and he could round out quite the group out wide for A&M if he ends up committing. We'll keep a close eye here as the date approaches.
