Three DC candidates Texas A&M football should consider if Jay Bateman is fired

Texas A&M football fans are disgruntled with the way the defense shaped up this season— as is Elko. If the Aggies move on at DC, here's who they should look at.

Three potential DC candidates for Texas A&M football - Clayton White

This is the wildcard option. Clayton White, the DC for the South Carolina Gamecocks, has had a renaissance year in 2024. SC boasted one of their best defenses in recent memory, bolstered by a physical defensive backs group and a ferocious pass rush.

However, White's record isn't unblemished. He's a good recruiter, but the talent hasn't always translated in Columbia. This has been a great year for the Gamecocks, but they've had some ups and downs along the way.

White clearly knows how to coach his defense to be physical— that's something all of his units have had since he came to South Carolina. But more than physicality is needed. There's also a question about how well his scheme would mesh with Elko's.

I think this is a sneaky option if the Aggies move on from Bateman, but I'm not sure it would be the top on A&M's list— plus, there's not really much of a prior connection, nor are there whispers that White would be looking to leave Columbia. It would be a long shot, but White is no doubt a hot name for what he's done this season.
