Billy Napier goes from being our best friend in Week 6 — after taking down the Longhorns 29-21 — to our Week 7 foe as he brings his 2-4 Florida Gators into Kyle Field at College Station for a Saturday night showdown between two talented SEC football teams.
Few groups have looked better than the Aggies through the first six weeks and, while they find themselves as prohibitive favorites in this upcoming battle, there is no guarantee they waltz past the Gators. So let's dive into some of the biggest storylines surrounding this game as we inch closer to kickoff.
Acknowledging what these teams are as opposed to what they were
I think it's easy to look at Florida's season in totality, hang on to what this team looked like in Weeks 1-5, dismiss how it fared against Texas and feel comfortable about an easy Aggie victory. However, that's a very dangerous game to play.
This Gator team looked night-and-day different coming off their bye week and there are several reasons why. The first being the debut of its star freshman wideout Dallas Wilson, who was sidelined up until last week with a lower-leg injury suffered in fall camp. Wilson stood out in a big way against the Longhorns, grabbing six balls for 111 yards and two touchdowns. He's a big, physical wideout that requires attention from opposing defenses, which has opened up a lot of other avenues for this offense to find success.
Texas had to respect the Gator passing game which opened up more running lanes for Jadan Baugh, who rushed for 107 yards and a score on 27 carries. It also led to easier assignments for the other wideouts to make plays when called upon. While it might be easier to just blame this output on Texas, I think this says a lot more about the team that Florida is molding itself into.
Now, thankfully, the Aggies are another beneficiary of this same mindset. As much as Florida has improved from its first month of regular-season play, so has Texas A&M. We've seen steady growth in this team's rushing attack and run defense the last couple of games, things that were glaring issues through the first few games of the regular season.

It’s the first time the Aggies have gone for 200+ on the ground in back-to-back SEC games since they had 209 and 204 on Auburn and Arkansas in 2023 👀 pic.twitter.com/rjHFGrV2XR
Those 200-yard rushing performances came after logging games of 108 and 129 against UTSA and Notre Dame, respectively. Mike Elko's defense has been just as improved at stopping the run, holding Auburn and Mississippi State to a combined 129 yards after allowing an average of 139 yards through its first three games.
As much as Florida might be inching closer to the team many expected to be, it's more than worth noting that they're facing an A&M team that's seen just as much growth the last few weeks.
