One possession can make all the difference

Late in the game against the Tide, a rebound bounced off of the hands of both teams before going out of bounds. Possession was initially awarded to the Aggies, but following loud disagreement from the Alabama crowd, it was given to the Tide without a video review. This was a huge break for Alabama, as they had no challenge remaining, and the ensuing shot was a three-point make for Nate Oats's squad.

A few possessions later, the Aggies had played 29 seconds of great defense before a Crimson Tide guard hit a circus shot while twisting past Marcus Hill for a foul call. The improbable heave fell for Alabama, and the Tide got the and-one shot as well.

If either of those possessions go slightly differently— if the Aggies keep possession instead of the referees reversing it, or Hill stymies the Tide on that crazy shot without fouling— the end of game situation looks remarkably different. The Aggies would be shooting to take the lead rather than tie, as Agee would not have been put on the line intentionally, and I like their odds in that situation.

This, also, is to say nothing of the missed ten-second backcourt violation that should have been called on the Tide. Maybe the game goes to overtime and ends the same way. But one thing is clear: there is no wide gap between these teams, despite the wide gap in roster talent. This Aggie team can hang with anyone in the country.
