Texas A&M football has been a beneficiary of the recent recruiting rankings updates, as the major sites have updated their evaluations of the nation's top players. Though the Aggies' class overall remains at the second spot, with Oklahoma just ahead, Texas A&M fans should still feel very positively about this update and the resultant outlook for the Aggies to get the top class in the nation.

Here are three big takeaways for Aggie fans after the recent updates to the recruiting composite rankings.

Texas A&M recruiting ranking updates: Texas A&M's elite evaluation of Myels Smith is being recognized

Texas A&M fans were overjoyed when California DL Myels Smith ended up choosing the Aggies over some stiff competition, but up until this point, his recruiting ranking has not quite matched the level of hype that the A&M fanbase has felt. That doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things— the number on these websites is not the determining factor in how good the player is— but now, the recruiting sites have come around to what the Aggies were seeing in Smith.

After being down in the 200s early last year, Smith has now shot up into the top 50 overall players in the composite rankings. Specifically, in 247's in-house rankings, Smith was barely hanging around the top 300 players, but has now jumped up to 51 overall.

This speaks to Mike Elko and company's evaluations of Smith as an elite talent. Some previous staffs and others around the nation have followed the recruiting rankings industry to see who they should pursue, but conversely, Elko and company are leading the charge as they should be.
