Week 8 SEC power rankings: Aggies have an extremely tough row to hoe
16 - Vanderbilt
The Commodores went up on the Kentucky Wildcats early, but they couldn't sustain the lead. Jared Curtis continues to demonstrate some impressive skills as quarterback, but there's not much else to like about this team right now.
15 - Arkansas
The Hogs were off this week ahead of hosting Missouri. Vibes are still better than they have been in Fayetteville thanks to defeating Vanderbilt a week ago, but it's tough to find a single win down the stretch of the season— Missouri, at Auburn, South Carolina, at Texas, and home against LSU are all going to be uphill battles.
14 - Auburn
Auburn came way back down to earth this week after their unlikely defeat of Georgia last weekend, getting thrashed at home by LSU. If beating the Bulldogs was the ceiling, this was the floor— Alex Golesh has put his proof of concept out there, but there's still clearly a lot of work left to do.
13 - Texas
The Longhorns nearly blew another huge lead, and are now set to be without star OT Trevor Goosby for the rest of the season. Cam Coleman got injured as well, and Colin Simmons is currently out with an ankle sprain. The win was big, but the future keeps looking darker.
12 - Mississippi State
The Bulldogs are now on a three-game slide after making their way well into the top 25 to start the year. They'll have a chance with Kamario Taylor against a banged-up Texas team on the road this week, followed by home games against Vanderbilt, Auburn, and Tennessee Tech ahead of the egg bowl.
11 - Oklahoma
The Sooners got back on track with a road win over Mississippi State, despite a late run by the Bulldogs. They host the suddenly-red-hot South Carolina Gamecocks this week before an intimidating two-game stretch of Florida and Ole Miss.
10 - Texas A&M
The Aggies looked a lot better against Alabama than they had in the preceding weeks on offense, but they were unable to hold a fourth-quarter lead against the Tide. A&M has a badly-needed bye week coming up before a difficult four games to close the year— two of which will be against teams in the top six of this ranking.
9 - Missouri
Eli Drinkwitz's team was off this week after getting humbled in Oxford the previous Saturday. They have a quick road date with Arkansas before a back to back against Texas at home and Georgia on the road— 2-1 in that stretch feels realistic, but it could mean they're out of playoff contention with three losses.
8 - Ole Miss
The Rebels had a few unlucky bounces on the road at Texas, and a furious comeback fell just short. They have a hopeful bounce-back game against Auburn this weekend, though Alex Golesh showed last weekend that you can't take this Tiger team for granted.
7 - Florida
Jon Sumrall's team is one of the hardest to figure out in the conference. It seems likely that we'll consider the Missouri loss a bit of a fluke when all is said and done, but it will be intriguing to see how the Gators do against Georgia this weekend.
6 - Tennessee
Volunteer fans are having a tough time with the loss to Carolina, but it wasn't too hard to see coming— Vegas even had the Gamecocks favored coming into that one. They'll have a bye week to regroup before facing off with a top-10 Kentucky at home.
5 - South Carolina
The Gamecocks aren't ranked at 4-3, but they're playing like one of the best teams in the conference over their last two games, demolishing Florida and taking down Tennessee. A trip to Oklahoma will be interesting— the Sooners will want to make that a slugfest, and they could bog down the Gamecocks pretty effectively.
4 - LSU
The Bayou Bengals finally got their first road win of the year with a very decisive victory over the Auburn Tigers. They have a bye week to get ready for the game against Alabama in Death Valley on November 7, which is shaping up to be a huge one.
3 - Alabama
The Tide pulled out a win against Texas A&M despite trailing at the end of the third quarter behind suffocating defense in the final frame. If they can beat LSU after the bye, they only need to win on the road at Vandy, home against UTC, and then in the Iron Bowl to make the Playoff for the second-straight year.
2 - Kentucky
The longest win streak in the SEC belongs to the Wildcats at six in a row— no one else has more than two. The Wildcats can rest easy on their bye week, but a trip to Neyland looms large.
1 - Georgia
The Bulldogs are still smarting after the loss to Auburn at home, so you can bet they are ready to take out some frustration on the Gators this upcoming week. It won't be an easy back half of the season for UGA— they'll have to navigate trips to Oxford and Columbia, SC— but they are still playoff favorites for a good reason.
