Why Rylan Griffen’s court victory means Bucky ball is about to dominate this year

Bucky McMillan is poised to add one of the biggest names from his roster last year back to the team, as a recent temporary restraining order granted Rylan Griffen another year of eligibility. The documents pertaining to Griffen in that order indicated that he would be spending this upcoming year in College Station, giving Texas A&M one of their most deadly shooters back from the previous year.

Texas A&M was caught in the crossfire of the recent rule that was added by the SEC prohibiting former professional players from returning to college. Though the rule was precipitated by Lane Kiffin hoping to add pros to his LSU Tigers team, the rule that the SEC handed down prohibited former professionals in basketball (with the exception of certain leagues) as well as football from playing, meaning former G-League guard turned Texas A&M signee Bryson Warren was ineligible.

Warren was granted a restraining order against the NCAA in the aftermath of this ruling, and it seemed for a moment that language in that ruling may allow him to play for the Aggies after all— but when all was said and done, Texas A&M decided to cut bait and let Warren test the waters with a team that wasn’t facing such a tricky legal situation.

Griffen, though it was thought that his eligibility had been exhausted, did not join up with a professional roster, simplifying his path back to the Aggies significantly. This is especially true compared to Warren, who may have had a case, but the strident nature of the promised penalties from the SEC was enough to make any team who was thinking about it balk.

So, what is Texas A&M getting back in Griffen? Not only are they bringing back a ton of experience and a guy who has played in the SEC for a while, but Griffen was one of the Aggies’ best and most clutch shooters and overall scorers last season.

Griffen shot a blistering 40.4% from beyond the arc last year in the Maroon and White, which is quite the number for a player whose game transcends camping out behind the line. He was a double-digit scorer as well, averaging 11.2 points per game, and he gives the Aggies another option to handle the ball when they face pressure.

He was one of McMillan’s most impactful transfers overall last year, in other words, and he figures to be a big time player again. Having continuity in the system is a massive win as well, especially with so many other players that are entirely new to Bucky Ball. Hopefully, this return for Griffen is just as massive as it seems right now.
