News came down today that one of Texas A&M football's highest-rated commitments, KJ Edwards, is set to take some in-season visits to a pair of SEC rivals, as reported by Landyn Rosow. Close followers of Edwards' recruitment should not be surprised to learn that those two programs are Texas and LSU, as they are the two who have been after him the hardest, behind the Aggies themselves.
However, though this is not an ideal scenario, Texas A&M fans should in no way be freaking out. The Aggies still have a lot of things going for them in this recruitment, not the least of which is the fact that they are the school that he's actually pledged to at this point!
And to be realistic, as much fun as it is to have a laugh at other recruiting insiders who completely underrated A&M's chances in this recruitment, they had a real reason to be optimistic about their own side— Edwards did like the other schools. But, again, I still don't think there's any reason to panic— at least yet.
Texas A&M fans should not be too worried about KJ Edwards taking other visits
As things stand right now, there are really no indications that the Aggie faithful should be doubting the status of Edwards' commitment. This is the first thing that could be taken as a warning sign by those who have been following his recruitment, and it's not even a completely sure thing yet.
We often see recruits plan a visit and then shut them down later, which I'm sure the Aggie coaches will be working to have happen in this instance. There's no reason that, just because Edwards has these vistis scheduled at the moment, he wouldn't back off of those plans later on.
There's a lot more mileage to go, in other words, before any kind of panic is warranted. If things severely change on one of these visits— not something that often happens, but definitely possible— then we can reevaluate, but for now, it's just part of the modern recruiting game.
The Aggies will be competitive to keep their own pledges without a doubt, so no worries there. With as highly prized as Edwards is, I don't see them letting him slip away.
