Will Texas A&M football move up to prime position in tonight's CFP rankings?
Can Texas A&M football move into the top 12 in tonight's CFP rankings?
We are hours away from the second week of the college football playoff committee's rankings, and Texas A&M football—though idle this last weekend—has a chance to move up.
Last week, the Aggies nabbed the 14th spot in the rankings, just behind 8-1 SMU at 13. The Mountain West-leading Boise State was the first team in the field at 12.
There has been some shakeup since that point, however. Can it benefit the Aggies? Let's take a look.
Texas A&M football could slide a spot, but resume continues to strengthen
In the AP Poll, the Aggies stayed static at 15 thanks to LSU sliding back from ahead of them, but Ole Miss jumping them. In the CFP rankings from last week, though, LSU and Ole Miss were both behind the Aggies.
I think we see the Rebels move ahead of Texas A&M still, though, which would mean that the Aggies slide back a spot with nothing to counterbalance it. Georgia is not going to slide far enough to be behind A&M, and they're the only team ranked ahead of the Ags that lost a game last week.
However, I think we see South Carolina move into the rankings, which will make the Aggies' loss look not quite as bad. It's pretty obvious that the Gamecocks were right outside the rankings last week, and with the decisive win over Vandy—the worst loss the Commodores have yet sustained this year—they should move into the rankings.
One of Georgia or Tennessee will lose this week, so even though A&M has an easy game against New Mexico State, they still could move back up next Tuesday. For now, though, I'd expect to see the Aggies sitting at 15 this week.
