The National Invitational Tournament plays host to the 32 teams that fell short of an NCAA Tournament berth. Think of it as a large consolation bracket that starts seeding at No. 69 in the national.

All regular season conference champions that fail to earn an automatic bid receive an automatic bid to the NIT. Once those automatic bids have been filled the committee will hand out the remaining bids to fill the 32 team field. Those teams will be divided into four eight-team regions and seeded one through eight accordingly.

The NIT Final Four will square off at the fabled Madison Square Garden. However, unlike the NCAA Tournament, NIT-bound schools will play in the respective home arenas of the higher-seeded team. Unless of course there is a logistical conflict that would make a home game not possible for that team. If that were the case other arrangements would be made.

What the NIT might lack in star power it makes up for with the unexpected. There has never been a No. 1 seed upset by a No. 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament, but No. 1 seeded NIT teams have fallen to No. 8 seeds in the NIT. That happened as recently as last year when St. Bonaventure fell to lower seeded Wagner at home in the first round of the NIT.
