Game 2: No. 6 LSU defeats Texas A&M 7-4

Texas A&M’s performance in Game 2 can be summed up in one word: frustrating. As fantastic as the team’s performance was on Thursday night to start the series, Friday’s performance was equally rough.

Stephen Kolek started great but got rattled early as the Aggies were never quite able to overcome an early 4-0 defect, losing 7-4. Kolek pitched 5.2 innings, allowing 4 runs on 8 hits. In the third inning Kolek committed an absolutely dreadful error that ended up costing Texas A&M dearly. With runners on 1st and 2nd, Kolek attempted a pick off at the 2nd base but threw it well wide and into center field. Both runners advanced and ended up scoring as Kramer Robertson sent a double to left field a few pitches after the error.

Plain and simple: If Texas A&M wants to continue to compete for the SEC Championship, errors like this have to be completely eliminated.

Walker Pennington attempted to lead Texas A&M back, in the top of the 7th, as he launched a 2 run #whammy to left, cutting the LSU lead in half. However, LSU responded in the bottom half with back-to-back solo home runs off of Landon Miner, giving LSU a 6-2 lead. Lee May Gonzalez didn’t help by walking in a run in the 8th, increasing LSU’s lead to 5. Cole Bedford’s 2 run #whammy in the 9th was too little too late.

This game had us questioning the Texas A&M offense all over again. How do you get the lead off man on in each of the first four innings and have nothing to show for it? How do you load the bases with one out in the top of the 4th and get no runs? Not exactly the ideal way to follow up game one victory.
