Game 3: Texas A&M defeats LSU 4-3

Nothing like a little Olsen Magic on the road.

First off, a major round of applause is due to Corbin Martin. With the exception of the home run to Robertson, Martin was absolutely lights out. Martin pitched eight solid innings, allowing three runs on only four hits while striking out five. He also retired the first 9 of the first 10 batters he faced, allowing one walk in the process.

Mitchell Kilkenny earned his second save of the year, retiring all 3 batters he faced in the top of the 9th. His move from the rotation to the pen is working out well so far.

The Texas A&M offense on the other hand was nowhere to be found for the first eight innings. The Aggies continued to struggle bringing men home, leaving five runners on base during the first eight frames. But then Walker Pennington picked a heck of a time to wake Baton Rouge up. Pennington launched a three run #whammy to left field in the top of the 9th to catapult the Aggies over LSU, 4-3.

Bottom Line

Texas A&M was 6 for 32 With Runners in Scoring Position on the weekend.

6 for 32…

If that stat doesn’t scare you then I admire your faith in our pitching staff. As huge as this first SEC series win is for the Texas A&M Aggies, the inability to get runners home is still a major concern. It’s clear this team has the talent both on the mound and at the plate to compete with the SEC’s best. Putting it all together consistently still hasn’t happened yet.

This series was a big boost for Texas A&M. Without Pennington’s blast, Texas A&M drops a third consecutive SEC series to start conference play and the conversation becomes very different. The road gets no easier as the Aggies face a talent Dallas Baptist squad Tuesday and a surprisingly tough Auburn team next weekend.
