Quarterback Notes and Comments
1 Touchdown, 0 Interceptions
Nick Starkel is accurate, and man does he have a cannon for an arm. That’s an immediate upgrade from last season.
He might not be as shifty as Kellen Mond, but he isn’t a statue in the pocket. With 7:50 remaining in the first quarter he rolled out to his right an threw across his body to pick up a third and eight. Very impressive pocket presence. I’ve been very impressed with Starkel’s mobility so far.
Starkel was “sacked” in the endzone for a safety. Partly due to a lack of open receivers. It doesn’t matter how strong him arm is if nobody is open.
1 Touchdown, 2 Interceptions
Early on it looked like Mond was pressing and trying to do a bit too much. He needs to settle down and go through his progressions rather than hit the home run ball.
When he returned to the game at the 7:00 minute mark of the first quarter he looked more poised. He hit Christian Kirk then Aaron Hansford on back to back sideline passes, the later of which was a 44 yard touchdown. If he can do that consistently AND run the ball… wow.
Mond can make most of the throws and has a strong downfield arm. He’s got some growing up to do, and it won’t get an easier against SEC defenses. We didn’t get to see much of his running ability showcased on Saturday, and that itself could be a gamechanger.
1 Touchdown, 0 Interceptions
Coming into the spring many had gotten the idea that Jake Hubenak was more of a “game manager”. Through the first quarterback he made some good throws, but didn’t do anything that made me go “wow!”
That said, Hubenak led a touchdown drive midway through the second quarter. He completed an 18 yard pass on the run to Quartney Davis for the score. The drive was well executed and balanced. The consistency Hubenak brings to this Aggie offense is evident.
