Texas A&M Football: Mid-Season Offensive MVP
By John Tee
Pro comparison
Kellen Mond is still a true freshman, and the rest of the season has yet to play out, but I’ll go ahead and state the obvious. Some of the flashes of brilliance Mond has shown bring to mind the times when Johnny Manziel just ran all over opposing defenses. Of course, Mr. Manziel’s pro career didn’t exactly pan out, so who does Mond compare to that actually plays in the NFL?
Right now, I might catch some flak for this, but Kellen Mond is not all that different from Deshaun Watson of the Houston Texans and formerly of the Clemson Tigers. Watson was known to be an elite rushing quarterback in college, and he’s so far proven to be a serviceable rushing quarterback in the NFL. He’s also currently in a three-way tie for the second most touchdown passes in the NFL with Alex Smith and Tom Brady, all of which have 15 on the season. That’s some pretty lofty company.
Now, Kellen Mond is just a freshman, but to me, Deshaun Watson represents the kind of ceiling Kellen Mond could have if he just keeps doing what he’s doing and learns from the older guys on the team.

It’s way too early to talk about draft numbers, but I imagine that if Mond just continues to improve on a weekly basis, it wouldn’t be too surprising to me if he wound up as a first round pick by the time he does decide to go pro, whatever year that is. For now, we’ll enjoy watching him run circles around defenders at Kyle Field.
