Texas A&M Football: 5 reasons Nick Starkel should be the starting quarterback
By Jeff Shull
He fits the prototypical Jimbo quarterback
In his time as the head coach at Florida State, Fisher used guys who had similar skillsets. For each of them, their arm was their best asset and he coached them to only use their legs when absolutely necessary.
Year | Quarterback | Style |
2010 | Christian Ponder | Pocket Passer (180 total rush yards) |
2011 | EJ Manuel | Pocket Passer (151 total rush yards) |
2012 | EJ Manuel | Pocket Passer (310 total rush yards) |
2013 | Jameis Winston | Pocket Passer (219 total rush yards) |
2014 | Jameis Winston | Pocket Passer (65 total rush yards) |
2015 | Everett Golson | Pocket Passer (-35 total rush yards) |
2016 | Deondre Francois | Pocket Passer (198 total rush yards) |
2017 | James Blackman | Pocket Passer (-39 total rush yards) |
Starkel definitely isn’t the better runner of the two A&M quarterbacks competing for the job. Mond has a significant leg up in that regard, but it’s not really going to matter. Fisher needs a quarterback who will get the ball down the field and always keep his eyes looking down field even when the pocket breaks down.
Starkel already does this well and won’t need much coaching. In his short time filling in for Starkel, Mond looked to run early and often. He will have to kick that habit if he ever wants to start for Fisher.
