Texas A&M Football RB Devon Achane has breakaway speed and big play ability

The term “breakaway speed” is thrown around a lot in college football. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that it is extremely overused and the strength of the expression has been lost over the years. That said, Devon Achane has breakaway speed in the truest form possible.

At 5-9 and 185 pounds, Achane will not shock anybody with his size. He’s on the small end for runningbacks, but lucky for him, he won’t need size.

There’s no way to measure this at the college level, but Achane is likely the fastest runningback in the SEC. He is able to prove this with the fact that he is a multi-sport athlete. When he’s not tearing it up on the football field, he is excelling in track.

Again, I won’t act like I know anything about track and field, but just based on his accolates it’s easy to tell that he is the real deal. In his first year, he has already set a 200m time that is the 11th best in Texas A&M history.

He showed off some of this track speed in the Aggies’ Orange Bowl win over the North Carolina Tarheels, breaking away on a run that put the Aggies ahead by a touchdown with less than four minutes to go.

He’s the type of player who gets into open space and is gone. There likely aren’t any defenders who can catch him once he gets free, so he’ll provide a huge boost to the Aggies there.
