The Texas A&M Football program has come a long way in just a few short years. Before Jimbo Fisher came to College Station as head coach, the program was decent, but couldn’t stick around near the top of the SEC for long.

Kevin Sumlin was a great coach who left the program in a better state than he found it, but ultimately, he didn’t get the team where they wanted to be. Sumlin peaked in his first season, seeing his squad finish with a top ten ranking, but never revisiting the top of college football again in his tenure.

Under Jimbo Fisher, things have changed in that aspect. Even though Fisher has only spent a single season with a top-5 ranking, it feels like this could last more than it did with Sumlin.

The Texas A&M Football team could be considered the second-best SEC program right now

If you had to rank SEC programs at this exact moment, who would you put above Texas A&M? The obvious answer is Alabama, but beyond the Crimson Tide, who else has earned a spot above the Aggies?

Yes, LSU won a national title just a couple of years ago, but their fall from grace was astronomical a year after. Last year, they went 6-6, proving that without Joe Burrow and a handful of other players, they couldn’t come close to their previous level of play.

In 2021, you have to expect the Aggies to be better.

The next team down the list is likely Georgia, who has been the most consistent program in the Southeastern Conference outside of Alabama. If there’s a team that has a claim to second-best SEC program over the Aggies, it’s the Bulldogs.

That said, Georgia seemingly has a ceiling as a program. Even though they have finished in the top ten in each of the last four seasons, they seem like they’re a mile away from winning a national title. Rather than aiming to beat Alabama, their success seems to be based on hoping that ‘Bama will have an off-year at the right time.

At the present moment, you have to give the nod to Georgia, even if the Aggies had a better 2020 season than them. 2021 could be telling, and if Texas A&M is able to take down Alabama, I don’t think there should be any doubt that they have the second-best program in the country.

Next. Aggies get huge recruiting boost with staff addition. dark

That said, a lot of things have to go right in order for that to happen. The Aggies aren’t quite there yet, but they have a higher ceiling than anybody else in college football at the present moment.
