Texas A&M Football 2022 Prospect No. 2: S Jacoby Mathews

The Texas A&M football team has been elite at the safety position in recent memory. Heck, the Aggies have been elite at virtually every position defensively, even with a handful of injuries and suspensions hitting this unit last season.

The prime example in 2021 would likely be Leon O’Neal, who had a career year that ultimately resulted in him declaring for the 2022 NFL Draft. O’Neal recorded career-highs in every defensive category imaginable with 58 tackles, three tackles for loss, two interceptions, a defensive touchdown, and five pass deflections.

Now, Jimbo Fisher is looking for someone who can fill his shoes. Jacoby Mathews may be that guy.

One of the last targets left on Fisher’s board is Mathews, who is a high four-star (247Sports) safety prospect out of Ponchatoula, Louisiana. The 6’2″ defender is one of the best in his class and rated as a five-star player according to rivals.

Mathews has said that he’ll be making his decision in February, presumably on national signing day (Feb. 2). As things stand, this looks like it could be a battle between A&M and LSU, two schools that are splitting crystal balls right now.
