Texas A&M Football: Safety depth

Starters: Demani Richardson (SR), Jardin Gilbert (SO)

Backups: Jacoby Matthews (FR), Bryce Anderson (FR)

Reserve: Smoke Bouie (FR), Alex Zettler (SR)

The safety room has a ton of potential and they are lucky to have Demani Richardson at the head of the group. With the departure of Leon O’Neal, Richardson is the lone star in the safety room, unless you count Antonio Johnson in here too. I expect sophomore Jardin Gilbert to start alongside Richardson after a solid year off the bench.

Off the bench will more than likely be a pair of freshmen. It was really difficult to pick two, but Jacoby Matthews was the easier pick for me. He brings the biggest and most college-ready frame of the three. For the other spot, I chose Bryce Anderson. I chose him because I think he will play more safety than slot, unlike the other of the three.

The other, Smoke Bouie, I believe will have split snaps between safety and slot corner. His build calls for more of a slot presence and I think that if he does play this season, he will play more of that slot-safety role. Senior Alex Zettler will compete for snaps as well, but I think there is too much of a talent gap between him and the freshmen.
