Haynes King will be the starting quarterback for Texas A&M football in 2022. This comes as no surprise really, but it should still be noted as the correct decision.

Jimbo Fisher decided not to name the starter at the most recent press conference, but after word started getting out on Saturday, he decided to announce it earlier than he wanted. King has now won his second straight quarterback battle, this time over LSU transfer Max Johnson.

There are three big reasons why tabbing King over Johnson as the QB1 was the right decision for Fisher. I will be highlighting those three reasons in this article, as they can be the difference of an 8-4 team and a potential College Football Playoff team.

1. Texas A&M football QB Haynes King has experience under Coach Fisher

One of the biggest legs King had up on Johnson was that he is already familiar with the system that Coach Fisher implements for his offense. Last offseason, King had even impressed many on the team by his knowledge of the scheme and playbook when he won the starting job the first time.

Having that comfortability with the playbook, captaining the offense, and calling the right audibles will pay dividends for Fisher and his quarterback. King does that and reportedly very well. He knows his teammates and has built great chemistry with his offensive line and weapons.

King has this experience at College Station that Johnson doesn’t. It’s not a knock against the LSU transfer, because obviously it’s not his fault. King just naturally had that upper hand in that category, however, that is a big plus to have not just in the quarterback battle, but against other opponents on the field.
