Texas A&M football heard some great news Saturday afternoon: the College Football Playoff will expand to 12 teams. The CFP board approved the format today and it is set to take effect in for the 2026 season and on.

Obviously, this does not effect the game and the team currently, but coach Jimbo Fisher should be a happy man after hearing this news. Not only is it great news for Fisher, but for the SEC as a whole.

For one, now, you can afford to lose a game and have a chance to play for a championship. For years, the final four has had many of the same teams, including Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, and Clemson among others. I understand, it should be the best teams get in, but it makes for much more interesting football when you add in other powerhouses to the mix.

So you might be asking: how does this benefit Texas A&M? Well, it’s easy to pick up a loss or two in the best and most competitive conference in all of college football. Heck, even the best division in all of college football. Soon, that will be something that not many teams will have to worry so much about.

Now, the Aggies will be able to handle a loss or even two and still compete for a playoff spot. Bama will run the SEC West for the foreseeable future. Since its inception, there have never been multiple SEC West teams in the playoffs. In a conference where they tend to have the most talented teams, they get left in the dust because they beat each other up.

With this new format, it gives the Aggies a shot every year. This will not only make for more interesting January’s, but it will make for a more even playoff. The best teams will be in, along with other darkhorses who may have gone undefeated or 11-1 against lesser teams. This gives teams who had to beat the top teams and did well enough and teams who dominated weaker competition a chance to prove themselves. Move over March Madness, the CFP just got a lot more interesting.
