Texas A&M Football: 3 reasons the Aggies will beat Appalachian State
Haynes King and the Aggie passing game
The explosiveness on display against Sam Houston was a welcome sight for many Aggie fans. We’ve all been itching to see Fisher open up the downfield passing game ever since he’s been here, and it finally seems as though the WR group has been cut loose in a big way. I expect that trend to continue throughout the whole season, and that includes this Saturday.
Personally, the thing I’d most like to see – aside from zero turnovers – is a heavier incorporation of Achane into the pass offense. No. 6 was quite the downfield pass-catching threat in his high school days, and he’s flashed that same potential at times since arriving at A&M. Whether it’s motioning him out of the backfield, or utilizing the similar versatility that Ainias Smith presents to go from a 2-back set to 4 or 5-wide on consecutive plays, I really think so much could be done with the problems Achane presents a defense.
And that’s not even to mention Evan Stewart and Chris Marshall. The two freshmen had quite the impact on the Ags’ first game of the 2022 season, both snaring several catches before the day was over.
Another thing not enough people are discussing are how sure-handed the freshmen looked – I can remember several season openers where the Aggie WR corps seemed plagued by drops out of the gate. Not so with Stewart and Marshall. I expect at least one of them, if not both, to emerge with a huge day against App’s defense.
