Projecting How New Texas A&M Football Coach Fills Out Staff

Texas A&M football has their man in Mike Elko, after a very strange series of events not 48 hours ago that seemed to have Mark Stoops slated to take the job. Of course, as we all now know, the Stoops hire didn’t go through following the Board of Regents deciding not to rubber stamp it (doubtless due at least in part to the outcry against the hire that Texas A&M football fans made in response to the news leaking out), and the board pivoted to hiring Elko. This was much better met by Aggie fans, players, and the national media.

After a brief twinge of uncertainty following reporting by the Duke insiders that Elko hadn’t yet informed the Blue Devil brass of his decision, the new Aggie head man departed Raleigh en route for College Station last night and arrived very early this morning.

An official announcement and presser are expected later today. We will be covering those as they happen.

Elko’s defensive bona fides are well known. His experience here with several of the current staff is encouraging as regards continuity, with one name in particular being pretty big there. But how will Elko fill out the rest of his staff? That’s the biggest question remaining with this hire. You have to think, given how things went under Jimbo, that the Aggie brass are ready to shell out for some top assistants, especially on the offensive side of things.

In this article, I’ll weigh who is likely to be in each spot with a little bit of my own speculation. There’s a bit of “wish-list-ness” to some of these spots, as I don’t necessarily have a great feel for Elko’s connections with the given names, but I’ll be sure to note which I think are likely and which are educated guesses. That said, let’s start with probably the most important guy on staff.
