Three Defenders, One Tight End for Texas A&M Football Enter Transfer Portal

Over the last few days, Texas A&M football has had a lot of news breaking around the program. With coaching hires and recruiting the talk of the Maroon and White faithful, some of the portal entries have flown a bit under the radar. Here are the most recent names to declare their intentions to transfer.

DB Jardin Gilbert
Gilbert announced his intentions to enter the portal a few days ago. The safety from White Castle, Louisiana, was a late commitment in the 2021 class and began the year as a starter. After an injury against Miami, however, Jacoby Mathews took his spot and didn’t relinquish it.

Because of the above-named factors, this isn’t a huge shock—in honesty, none of these four are huge shocks. Gilbert has great upside and showed a high level of ability in his time for the Aggies, but given that he was no longer going to start, it was best for him to find another spot.

DL Micaiah Overton and LT Overton
The Overton brothers came to campus as part of the 2022 class: LT as a highly-rated lineman who had reclassified up a year, and Micaiah as a transfer from Liberty. LT had been ranked as the top overall player in the 2023 class before making the move to reclassify to ’22, where he was still ranked as a five-star player.

Perhaps due to moving up a year, LT didn’t quite make the impact that was anticipated over his two years here. He only recorded 17 tackles this year, and only one sack over two years. Micaiah only saw the field in cleanup duty, and didn’t record many statistics. Hopefully the change of scenery for LT will allow him to continue to grow as a player and move into a featured role.

TE Jake Johnson
Another one in the “non-surprise” category, this was speculated about as soon as Max Johnson entered the portal. When the news came down this morning, I’m not sure any Texas A&M football fan was taken aback.

Having exactly zero inside information, I fully expect Jake to end up with his brother in Chapel Hill. For the Aggies’ part, getting back Donovan Green next year after he missed 2023 with an ACL injury will be massive, as will the continued development of Theo Melin Ohrstrom and Jaden Platt.
