Texas A&M fans can breathe easy now that their five-star quarterback commitment from the class of 2028, Donald Tabron, has canceled the visit he was reportedly supposed to take to LSU this weekend. Tabron is the cornerstone of the 2028 class for the Aggies, who won out for his services over the Tigers and the Oregon Ducks, so public signs of wavering are not a good look in the slightest.
Some Aggie beat reporters have always contested the idea that Tabron was going to visit LSU in the first place, despite national reports from places like Rivals, and it turns out that they were the ones who were right all along. If nothing else, though, it certainly seems like Tabron had at least an inkling to visit the Tigers— they were one of his finalists, after all— but Elko and this staff were able to shut that down quickly.
Even with the vibes pretty low around the fanbase right now— and threatening to get lower if they fall in Death Valley this weekend— Elko and his assistant coaches are still getting things done on the recruiting trail. Tabron's change of heart— or, maybe, his commitment to this program in the first place— shows that Elko's ability to sell the recruits on the vision for the program should reassure Aggie fans going forward.

Fans who are worried about the current recruiting class falling off if the Aggies struggle to make it back to the Playoff this year would do well to remember that, when Texas A&M got their no. 1 overall recruiting class back in 2022, they were coming off of an 8-4 season. Recruiting success doesn't always only follow on-field success— heck, even Nick Saban's first top class came off of a year when his Crimson Tide went 7-6.
The success, if you have resources to be competitive with the other top programs in the space, comes from your ability to connect with recruits and sell them on the vision you have for a program. That can get stale if there is absolutely no proof of concept, but it would take more than one middling season for that to happen for the Aggies, as long as this staff is still putting their all into the recruiting trail.
Elko and company are showing that they have no intention of letting their collective foot off the gas in recruiting, however. You can bet that, when they caught wind of Tabron potentially taking a visit to Baton Rouge, they got right on the phone with him to sort things out. This staff that Elko has assembled is not only relentless on the trail, they excel at creating organic connections with these recruits and leveraging those for long-term success in the recruiting game.
That means that, even if things go awry this season for the Aggies— and it may seem like that's what is going to happen if A&M falls short in Death Valley this weekend— that fans don't need to worry that things are going to start coming apart at the seams for this program's future. There's a lot of rebuilding that needed to happen after losing so much to the NFL Draft— it seemed like Elko and company had addressed those needs via the portal, but if things are more bleak than initially thought, it doesn't mean everything going forward is out the window.
